Expanding the Audience
According to a representative from WIT Studio, the ‘THE ONE PIECE’ anime remake aims to introduce the story of ‘One Piece’ to a broader audience, particularly those who may be reluctant to dive into the existing series.
The remake addresses two primary issues:
● The daunting number of episodes.
● The outdated 4:3 analog format that some viewers find hard to watch.
A New Beginning with Netflix
Announced by Netflix, ‘The One Piece’ is a fresh adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s classic tale about the Straw Hat Pirates. Partnering with WIT Studio, Netflix hopes the new animation style will attract more anime enthusiasts to the Grand Line. Although no release date has been disclosed, a recent interview with a WIT Studio executive sheds light on why the timing is ideal for reintroducing ‘One Piece’ to both old and new fans. With the series boasting over 1,100 episodes, starting anew makes practical sense.
Insights from WIT Studio Executive George Wada
In a recent discussion, WIT Studio Executive George Wada explained why now is the right moment for this reboot: “For younger viewers accustomed to modern anime technology, the 25-year-old footage of ‘ONE PIECE’ might be challenging to watch due to its different format. Toei Animation encouraged us to do our best while they continue to produce the latest episodes. The goal is for the manga, anime, and live-action adaptations to progress together and broaden the reach of ‘ONE PIECE.'”
The Essence of One Piece
Wada also reflected on the global appeal of Eiichiro Oda’s narrative: “Eiichiro Oda is passionate about spreading Japanese manga worldwide, which is why he ventured into creating a live-action version of ‘ONE PIECE.’ To further promote Japanese anime globally, we need to reach new audiences. Our production ‘Haikyu!!’ has been very successful in Japan, attracting new fans unfamiliar with anime. Both Oda and we aim to introduce anime to those who haven’t experienced it before, making ‘THE ONE PIECE’ a perfect entry point.”
